"Two young, soon-to-be maiko make their way to the Ichiriki for the first engagement of the evening. They have not yet become maiko, and do not yet have names, but soon they will be the newest maiko of Gion Kobu! Minarai (apprentice maiko) who are about to become maiko are often called "handara" because they wear their obi in a special way. The long, trailing obi that the maiko of Kyoto are famous for (darari) is shortened to half length (han=half)

I believe the young girl on the right is from Okinawa (^-^)/"
